Many immigration services create their own passport power rankings or use one in their advertising for marketing purposes. But are these rankings real, or are they just marketing scams? The answer is yes, and here is the real list of the 15 Most Powerful Passports.
The space has been called many things—economic immigration, investment migration, and Golden Passports/Golden Visas—but many service providers in this space use passport power rankings in their marketing to drive sales.
But do these so-called passport power rankings or passport strength indexes actually possess any real-world value?
Are their rankings based on actual facts regarding the totality of their real-world benefits?
In real-world terms, do the US and UK passports fail to even make the Top 10 most powerful passports in the world?
Well, the answer to all of those questions is a resounding NO, but that doesn’t mean different passports don’t give you different superpowers – some can, but only the ones you can buy.
The Many Problems With Passport Power Rankings
You have seen the paid ads masquerading as legitimate articles in USA Today, Barron’s, Business Insider, Forbes, Conde Nast, Fortune, CNBC, Robb Report, etc., about what the most powerful passports are this year.
Usually, they like to discuss how the US and UK passports are supposedly on the decline, as are those of other countries that, coincidentally, also have sizeable client bases that can afford the programs we sell.
Conveniently, when you read the article or listen to the report, it always cites a service or services that sell passport and Golden Visa programs.
Yes, all of that coverage is paid marketing. In case you didn’t know, the US and global media is a pay-to-play world.
No multi-billion dollar media company is investing the standard tens of thousands of dollars it takes to research and create an exposé on how the US passport compares to Grenada’s.
The service provider(s) listed in the article or interviewed in the report are paying for the exposure and have created the rankings.
Yes, these passport power rankings are 100% marketing collateral.
If they were based on actual real-world facts, they would all be the exact same list.
Take wealth, for example. No matter which list you look at, the US has the most billionaires in the world.
It’s a material fact – it doesn’t matter who creates the list [Forbes, Bloomberg, UBS, etc.] the list is the same.
The US is the only genuine climate for real wealth.
So why doesn’t it work that way with passport power rankings?
Answering that question is far simpler than this question – what actually is the ‘power’ that these lists are supposedly ranking?
What is passport power?
Since the marketing always references passport power in relation to travel, common sense would suggest that the rankings simply analyze the entry requirements for each passport into each country in the world:
- How many countries are visa-free? = most power
- How many require some form of permission? = less power
- How many countries require an actual visa? = no power
And the passport that offers the most visa-free access is logically the most powerful passport in the world, right? Nope, not even close.
For example, one ranking lists the UAE as the most powerful passport in the world, which provides visa-free access to 133 countries.
The same list ranks Spain in second place, also with 133. However, it ranks France as the third most powerful, yet France provides visa-free access to 134 countries – more than the UAE and Spain.
How can a passport that offers more visa-free travel be ‘weaker’ than passports that offer less visa-free travel?
That answer is simple. The UAE and Spain have Golden Visa programs [which the list creator sells], but France does not.
That same list ranks Singapore at 24th place even though it provides visa-free access to 138 countries.
That is more visa-free access than every passport ranked above it on that list, but the company sells programs for those other countries. While Singapore does have an economic migration program, that specific company doesn’t sell it.
There is a ranking that lists Singapore as #1, and that company sells the Singaporean program.
So, not much more than common sense is needed there, right?

This is an excerpt from an email I received from one of those investment migration services.
The email is a marketing piece from early February 2025, and it’s trying to sell the Grenada passport program.
As you can clearly see, this company states that Grenada’s passport enjoys visa-free access to 144 countries. Wow, right?!

Make The World Your Plan B
A Plan B strategy means something different for every client and must function and operate uniquely based on the needs and demands of every family.
Residency programs—Golden Visas—operate well when your Plan B is short-term and the implementation date is near immediate.
However, most of these programs, with the exceptions of Greece and Cyprus, only provide temporary residency status. As in the case of the UAE and Malta Golden Visas, they don’t all lead to citizenship eligibility either.
From a Plan B or retirement perspective, citizenship needs to be the foundation of the strategy.
While permanent residency may be useful for vacations or even retirement planning, it is not a foundation for creating an effective Plan B.
Acquiring only residency subjects your Plan B to the restrictions and constraints of being tied to a specific country and single government, thus giving you only one option to choose when the time comes.
